Once upon a speck of dust, high in the sky, a raindrop appeared. The raindrop grew bigger and bigger. Soon he noticed he was surrounded by other raindrops, in a cloud. The other raindrops said to him, "Raindrop, raindrop, don’t you know? Soon you will grow too big for this cloud and fall into the mountains!"
"Oh no!" the raindrop cried, "but I don't want to fall!”
"You have no choice," the others replied, "you will grow too big and fall down."
The raindrop was scared, he called to the lightening, "Lightening, lightening, is it true? Will I soon grow too big fall down into the mountains?"
"Yes,” said the lightening.
"But why?" asked the raindrop.
"Well," said the lightening, "who else will fill up the river?"
"But I don't want to fall out of this cloud!" the raindrop cried.
"Don't worry," the lightening tried, "when you do, I will come too, and crack over the canopies!"
The raindrop was still scared. He called to the thunder, "Thunder, thunder, is it true? Will I soon grow too big and fall down into the mountains?"
"Yes," said the thunder.
"But why?" asked the raindrop.
"Well," said the thunder, "how else will the flowers grow?"
"But I'm scared!" the raindrop cried.
"Don't worry,” replied the thunder, "when you do, I will come too, and I’ll roar on the mountain peaks!"
The raindrop was still scared. He called to the wind, "Wind, wind, is it true?"
"Yes," the wind replied.
"But I like it here!" the raindrop tried.
"Don't worry," the wind offered, "when you fall, I will come too, and blow through the valley!"
But the raindrop could not be reassured. Finally, he called to the sun, "Sun, sun, is it true? Will I soon grow too big and fall down?”
"Yes," said the sun.
"And will you come too?" the raindrop asked.
But the sun said, "No.”
This terrified the raindrop so much he said no more. Time passed. The raindrop grew bigger and bigger. The other raindrops called out, “Any moment now!”
And sure enough, eventually the raindrop fell.
Down, down, down fell the raindrop,
Lightening cracked over the canopies,
Down, down, down fell the raindrop,
Thunder roared on the mountain peaks,
Down, down, down fell the raindrop,
Wind blew through the valley,
Down, down, down, down, down.
Then with a splash the raindrop landed in the river. Now he was no longer a raindrop of course, he became a river-drop! Soon the river-drop heard other river-drops around him.
"River-drop, river-drop,” they said, “don’t you know? Soon the sun will come out and dry this river and you will fly up into the sky!"
"Oh no!" the river-drop cried, terrified, "but I don't want to fly into the sky!"
"You have no choice," the other river-drops replied.
And sure enough the sun appeared from behind the clouds. Light poured into the valley and dried the river, sending the river-drop rose into the sky, where he landed on a speck of dust, and once more became… a raindrop.
The raindrop grew bigger and bigger. Soon he noticed he was again surrounded by other raindrops, in a cloud. They spoke to him, "Raindrop, raindrop, didn’t you know? Soon you will grow too big for this cloud and fall down into the mountains!"
This time the raindrop smiled, “Oh yes,” he said, "I do know! But then the sun will come out and I will fly again, up into the sky.”
